HISTORY - Numbers Cabaret - 1042 Davie Street, Vancouver, BC

Like most of the West End, the 1042 Davie Street property including the Numbers building was once a residential home site.  Built in approximately 1894, the Numbers building housed many newcomers to Vancouver. After World War I it was a rooming house.  Traces of partitions separating bedrooms can still be seen. There was a common wash area, a downstairs kitchen and the shaft of the dumb waiter is still present.

Upon entering the building the entrance still has it original stained glass from the late 1800s and early 1990s.

The building still has its original granite foundations.  The remnants of a wood burning fireplace still exists on the main floor.  The fireplace is now enhanced with gas energy, but with the original stained glass still poised above it.

The upstairs bar, with its original stained glass, showcases the original wainscoting and the recently restored original old growth fir floor.

The Numbers building has had an interesting past, from residential home, to rooming house, to brothel, to disco.  Now in 2021 Numbers is a full featured show lounge, karaoke bar, and patio bar.

When Numbers was a disco it was called Tony Lemmor’s Factory.  It was classic disco and Mr. Lemmor was a throwback to the 1950’s era tough guy.

In 1980 the building was purchased from Ken Walley by the Clerides family. At roughly the same time Phil Moon purchased the Cabaret business occupying the building, and renamed it Numbers.  Recently the Cabaret business was also purchased by the Clerides family who now own both the building and the Cabaret business.

Numbers has a reputation of being Vancouver’s longest standing gay friendly bar.  In 2021 Numbers now caters to both LGBTQ and straight customers with a progressive and neighborhood friendly vibe.  Numbers is indeed Your Total Entertainment Centre!
